Eugenia Akuete, the founder of Mother's Shea Ltd, is a pioneering entrepreneur who has dedicated her life to promoting social good and empowering women. With a passion for quality, sustainability, and social impact, Eugenia has built a successful business that not only produces high-quality shea butter products but also uplifts the lives of women and their families.
Early Life and Inspiration
Born in Ghana, Eugenia spent her early years surrounded by the rich cultural heritage of her native country. Her mother, a strong and independent woman, instilled in her the values of hard work, resilience, and compassion. These values would later shape Eugenia's approach to business and her commitment to empowering women.
Career Journey
Eugenia's career spans over three decades, with significant experience in the US and UK. However, it was her return to Ghana in 2000 to care for her ailing mother that marked a turning point in her life. As she nursed her mother back to health, Eugenia’s mum frequently used shea as a part of her midwifery practice. In the process of nursing her mother back to health Eugenia rediscovered this nutrient-rich butter, commonly referred to in Ghana as “Women’s Gold.” What fueled her passion is the fact that it is the only industry dominated by rural women. It is their source of income and a source of pride for them. It’s an economic activity that affords them some measure of independence and pride. It is also a socially safe place for support from their culturally imposed limitations.
Entrepreneurial Spirit
Eugenia's entrepreneurial spirit was ignited by her desire to share the benefits of shea butter with the world while empowering women in the process. She founded Mother's Shea Ltd in 2000, with a clear vision to produce high-quality products at reasonable prices while giving back to society.
Partnerships and Empowerment
Eugenia's business model is built on partnerships with hundreds of women cooperative unions, offering them fair wages, training in quality control, personal finance, and health. She has provided support to over 1800 women in the Northern Savannah region of Ghana, enabling them to gain economic independence and improve their livelihoods.
Expertise and Leadership
Eugenia's expertise in the shea butter industry has earned her recognition as a thought leader, embraced every training opportunity offered by USAID’s West Africa Trade Hub.Through various workshops and conferences, she has expanded her knowledge of product development, quality standards, export readiness, and more. As a renowned expert, she has advised governments and mentored NGOs on sustainable practices and women’s empowerment, culminating in her appointment as the first President of Global Shea Alliance.
